Johan De Witt, (born Sept. 24, 1625, Dordrecht, Neth.—died Aug. 20, 1672, The Hague), one of the foremost European statesmen of the 17th century who as councillor pensionary (the political leader) of Holland (1653–72) guided the United Provinces in the First and Second Anglo-Dutch wars (1652–54, 1665–67) and consolidated the nation’s naval and commercial power.

Born at Dordrecht on September 24, 1625, to a wealthy merchant family, Johan de Witt was educated at Leiden University where he distinguished himself as a great mathematician and displayed remarkable talents in jurisprudence. When Johan de Witt visited him in the prison, a mob surrounded the two brothers and dragged them on the street. Johan and Cornelis were shot and left to the frenzied mob, and what followed was a macabre display of cannibalism : to humiliate the Grand Pensionary for letting his people down, his body, and that of his brother were stripped, hanged on a gibbet, and disemboweled .

The takeover by the regents did not go without protest from the Orangists, but with the economy booming and peace on the Union's borders they had little opportunity to remove the government from office. After practicing law in The Hague, Johan de Witt was elected 'raadpensionaris' ('Grand Pensionary') of the States of Holland in 1653, de facto Prime Minister of the Netherlands political system.
